This was a real treat. Last minute decision to go here. One big reason was because they were open early. I’m a vegan and I was able to order a filling breakfast. My sis had the quinoa with fruit and homemade granola. She said the grits were nice and creamy like our grandfather’s. Owner was very pleasant and brought us our food. Food was reasonable priced. Definitely will return. Thanks!

I had the shrimp and grits with a single side of French toast, Which was delicious!!
I couldn’t finish this all alone it was so filling.
From the moment you enter you are greeted by a very nice looking man, and once you order you grab a table they’ll bring your plate to you after you order at register.
I went on a Sunday and I went about 10am ,I think if I would’ve waited any longer then I for sure would’ve caught the rush.
The place gets packed!! Understandingly.
I will for sure go back Tuesday before I head back home.
Update: Had to come a second time before heading back home and it was even better!!! Minus the skillets not working so no pancakes, but I was still satisfied.
Why can't all the good restaurants be close to home😭😭

Simple Joe’s Cafe is an absolute gem and one of my favorite breakfast spots in Baton Rouge. I might be a creature of habit, but when something is this good, it’s hard to stray from it. My go-to order is Combo #3: grits, eggs any way, your choice of protein, and toast. My protein of choice? The grilled chicken—and it’s perfection every time.
The grits at Simple Joe’s are out of this world. They’re silky, rich, and decadent, almost like they’ve been whipped with heavy cream or a secret ingredient that makes them irresistibly smooth. The scrambled eggs are always fluffy and light, cooked just the way scrambled eggs should be. The grilled chicken is seasoned beautifully and cooked to perfection, adding the right amount of savory flavor to the meal.
The atmosphere is quintessential Baton Rouge—welcoming, vibrant, and full of local charm. Simple Joe’s reflects everything I love about Mid City and the nearby neighborhoods like Capitol Heights and the Garden District. The owner is a standout. He’s warm, personable, and has an incredible knack for making every customer feel like a regular, even if it’s their first visit.
Pro tip: It gets busy as the morning goes on, so arriving early is your best bet for a more relaxed experience. Whether you’re a repeat customer (like me!) or trying it for the first time, you’ll notice the personal touches, like the variety of coffee mugs you can choose from. It’s these small details that make Simple Joe’s feel like home.
Breakfast here is more than a meal—it’s an experience that reminds me why I’m proud to call Baton Rouge home. Highly recommend!

From the food to the service, everything is exceptional. Don’t bother seasoning your grits because they are already plenty seasoned on the first bite. The cinnamon roll is warm and fluffy and the cream cheese frosting is perfect. The bacon is salty, crispy and smoky. Even the omelet was fantastic with just sausage peppers and green onions. This food is delectable. My first meal and my first time visiting Baton Rouge did not disappoint.

Hands down this has to be one of the best places in Baton Rouge for breakfast! I love the casualness of this place. You place your order, get a number and find a seat. We came early so tables were available but this place gets busy quickly.
PROS: Everything! Atmosphere, music, food and staff are all awesome. Don’t skip the grits! They have to be the best I’ve ever had. Creamy and perfectly salted. I love that they offer smoked sausage as a meat option. It was tasty! Seriously this was a very tasty and satisfying meal. We left stuffed and happy!
CONS: None with the exception you may have to wait for a table but everything moves quickly.
Make sure to check out the local art that’s for sale on the walls. I have my eye on a few pieces. Can’t wait to return.

I loved how I was able to custom my order the way I desired for example instead of scrambled eggs they allowed customers to have it omelet style, that's was a major plus for me an their grits so delicious. I only spent $25 including tip an tax not bad for being a first time customer. Customer service was perfect I would recommend anyone to try them out, so I rate my experience a 10/10.

This place is very popular with the locals which is exactly what you want in a good breakfast place. Its counter serve and there is a healthy line. It seemed like tables cleared as new people checked out though so there was a place to sit if you wanted it. I had the biscuits and gravy which were fantastic. I also got a croissant breakfast sandwich. I ended up saving that and reheating the next morning. It was very good too!

Simple Joe is an old school diner feel. This environment is a Baton Rouge staple. Everything was flawless in our experience other than ordering - the individual taking our order looked absolutely thrilled to be working.
We enjoyed the ambience, the chefs were absolutely classic and super friendly. Definitely either get a pancake or French toast to go with your breakfast.
I ordered the Salmon omelette with bacon and toast. The pancakes were the hit, so fluffy and did not weigh on your stomach. Hashbrowns were old school southern and traditional along with the sausage biscuits and gravy. Give it a shot for a classic Americana breakfast in a delightful hole in the wall. 🥓 🥞
